Why Algerian Art Deserves Its Own Magazine

The Algérian is a concept art magazine that puts Algerian paintings and the stories behind them on the cover.

The Algérian magazine covers

What if Algeria had its own art magazine? The Algérian is a concept I designed to explore exactly that. It celebrates Algerian art through paintings, artists and the stories behind them, inspired by The Barcelonian Illustrated.

The Algérian magazine mock-up

Every issue is built around a single painting. Issue 001 features a girl with a striped headscarf and a bowl of pomegranates, and Issue 002 features a portrait by Antonio Zeno Shindler. A bold slab serif masthead and a dark spine strip keep the cover simple, so the artwork does the talking.

It is still just an idea, but I wanted to see how it would feel in real life. So I designed the covers and built mockups in a café and on a bookstore shelf. Algerian art deserves to be held, collected and talked about.
